A team might ask:

  • What could we test within one week?
  • How would we solve this without increasing the budget?
  • What would the simplest version look like?
  • How could we reduce the process to three steps?

The purpose is not to make the problem unnecessarily difficult. It is to direct imagination toward a specific type of solution.

The removable adhesive later used for Post-it Notes also came from an experiment that did not produce its intended result. The adhesive was too weak for its original purpose, but its unusual ability to stick lightly and be repositioned eventually became its value.
